| EU AWARDS €15 MILLION FOR FOOD ASSISTANCE IN ETHIOPIA |
|
The European Commission awarded on Friday a €15 million aid fund to address the food shortage and prevent hunger, malnutrition and epidemics to the disaster affected population in Ethiopia.
“The majority of the population in Ethiopia still live far below the poverty line, and is extremely vulnerable to severe changes in weather patterns, droughts, epidemics and protracted internal conflicts,” Kristalina Georgieva, Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response.
The Commission’s award will also support the agricultural and livestock sectors in order to safeguard livelihoods and enhance food security.
Ethiopia is also in need of disaster risk reduction programs in order to establish longer term solutions in climate change adaptation and strengthening communities’ won coping mechanisms. Last June, the Commission allocated €20 million to support six drought-prone countries, including Ethiopia.
In Ethiopia the level of infrastructural development is low and the economy is by and large agrarian. This results in a heavy reliance on seasonal variations and weather conditions as a natural disaster can bring down the main food income of the region. [BNO NEWS] |
