Ethiopia’s effort to ensure carbon free economy is exemplary to other countries, the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Director General, Dr. Tewolde Berhan Gebre Egziabher said.
The 2010 UNCTAD's World Investment Report (WIR) : Investing in a Low-Carbon Economy launched here on Thursday at UNCC.
On the occasion Dr.Twolde Berhane said all the hydro electric power stations being carried out in Ethiopia are from renewable energy sources.
The country has immense potential from wind, he said adding insignificant power is being generated from geothermal resource.
“ The Country has a lot of geothermal power potential all along the Rift Valley to all corners of the Continent, but in reality, it produces a little electricity from geothermal power” he said .
The director general said “ we have not used even three percent of our hydropower generation potential .”
Besides, Ethiopia has been planting, and will continue to plant, billions of trees each year he said and adding reforestation is increasing fast, though its impacts are now most noticeable in the Northern part of the country.
He further said Ethiopia can generate enough electricity from renewable sources to supply all of its production, service and transportation sectors of its growing economy.[ENA]
