UNAIDS Executive Director and Under- Secretary General of the United Nations, Michel Sidibe, said Ethiopia is making impressive progress in curbing the spread of HIV/AIDS.
Speaking at a discussion held at the Federal HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office (FHAPCO) today, Sidibe said, the country is making significant headway on key issues related to HIV/AIDS.
He said the country is making a major breakthrough in reducing HIV/AIDS prevalence and mortality rate, provision of HIV treatments, and reducing the number of AIDS orphans.
Sidibe indicated more effort should be made to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV and increase the number of people receiving HIV treatment as it is a potential tool for prevention.
Meskele Lera, Deputy Director General of FHAPCO, on his part said the efforts made to curtail the spread of the virus, increase number of people receiving HIV treatments and minimize AIDS orphans have born fruits.
He said the number of people receiving HIV/AIDS treatments has moved from 5,000 six years ago to more than 195,000 people now, which he said is a major step forward.
He further said mortality rate and number of AIDS orphans have fallen by more than 50 per cent.
More efforts would be made to prevent mother to child transmission of the virus and attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), Meskele noted. [walta]
