Organization for rehabilitation and development in Amhara (ORDA) is an indigenous, non-governmental, and not-for-profit development organization. It was founded by committed, visionary and volunteer Ethiopians in February 1984 as Ethiopian Relief Organization (ERO). It was established in response to the severity of rural poverty aggravated by the 1984 persistent drought, the civil strife, the then economic mismanagement, and above all the political contention of the “Derg” regime to extend humanitarian assistance that endangered the lives of millions of Ethiopians who were in the areas controlled by the then Ethiopian Peoples Democratic Movement (EPDM). Since then, ORDA played pioneer role in challenging natural and man made disasters and has been at the service of the poor people in their journey towards achieving food and livelihood security, poverty alleviation and sustainable development. In its historic path, ORDA as a learning organization has reinvented it self constantly to respond to the changing needs of communities and changing situations.
ORDA implements projects and programs in a view of ensuring livelihoods and environmental security and reducing poverty in the Amhara National Regional State. Its local and regional engagement focuses on helping communities to achieve economic, social and ecological sustainability. To this end ORDA has been working with communities, CBOs and grass root public institutions.
